1971 Norton Commando 850 Cafe Racer

First off, I would like to apologize for the poor quality of the previous bike and post. After taking a month plus off from blogging about the current crop of cafe racers, I was mostly discombobulated while writing that, given a comment or two that I received both online and in person. 😦 Be that as it may, it is time to move on to bigger and better things. Below you will see what I hope is my apology in action…

Here we have a really nice Commando 850 that has been entirely cafe’d. I am having trouble finding anything missing from this bike that would need upgrading immediately upon purchase. You could, of course, add higher-performance parts to it. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that it is basically a turnkey bike that the buyer can hop on and ride. The seller has been honest with the few issues that it has (speedo cable, oil weep, and tank dings), and it has a recently rebuilt engine. If there is anything I have missed that should be there (me not being a true Norton expert or anything like that), please let me know…

Currently, there is less than a day left in the auction, and the price is in the mid $4K range with 21 bidders. Perhaps it will break $5K before the auction ends. It isn’t perfect, but the seller is being very upfront with the issues it does have. Good luck if you bid…

1968 Honda CB350 Cafe Racer

Here’s a beautiful bike (nice job! to the builder). It’s a 1968 Honda CB350 twin that has been crafted into quite the well-done cafe racer. And check out that seat! I admit to never having seen one like that before with the narrow front to match the frame rails, and then the wider back section. I would guess that with a rider on it, the shape becomes perfect. Overall, a nearly flawless buildup that doesn’t appear to be a trailer queen.

On to business. The seller’s feedback appears to be good, and the price is at $2,000 with 5 days left. Given that there are 4 bidders already, I would guess that this bike will go up in price before the auction closes. Buy-It-Now, which is set at $3,250, will disappear if the price gets close, so if you think that’s a valid price (I do), you might want to consider that option. 1968 Honda CB350 Cafe Racer

I’ve got one of these in my garage right now taken apart down to the smallest part, and I can only hope that I am able to finish building it into something like this. Mine is actually an SL350, but same difference pretty much.

This particular cafe racer has some nice upgrades both aesthetically and mechanically. The most obvious things are the tank, seat, and paint. I’m a fan of brightly colored frames with fairly muted paint on the bodywork, and this bike delivers. The only issue is that it shoes off the lack of side covers and the placement of the seat on top of the subframe.

However, the lack of side covers does show off one of the mechanical upgrades, and that’s the Boyer electronic ignition. No points is cool! It also has new Mikuni carbs, and the motor has been gone through with new parts and a valve job. The rearsets are made from RC-51 parts, and the wheels appear to be 18″ front and rear, but no verification on that in the seller’s description.

This is one of the more reasonably priced cafe racers to come up for sale on eBay lately. The Buy-It-Now price is only $2,000, and bidding is currently at $1,000 with only 2 days left. Good luck if you are interested in going after this bike!

1974 Norton Commando MKII Roadster 850

Here’s a beautiful, clean, and non-restored Norton Commando cafe racer. The price is currently a low $3,150 with 2 1/2 days left in the auction. The seller has it listed on craigslist for $4,100, so I suspect the reserve is no higher than the craigslist price.

I focused on the price first, because the pics tell most of the story. However, there is more to the story. The seller is honest about the flaws on this bike, which include a small amount of road rash from a low speed dump and a couple of instances of cracked glass (speedo and headlight). It also has some nice upgrades other than the cafe racer aesthetics including electronic ignition, new headers, and an RGM brake system.

What’s especially nice about this bike is that it is very representative of a true British cafe racer. And honestly, the only aesthetic thing that has been done to this bike is the conversion to clubman bars. Damn, I wish I could afford this bike!

1963 / 1978 Triton 750

Here’s a beautiful cafe racer that is the real deal. This full on Triton build is at auction on eBay with a current price of $6K with about 3 days left. I expect this bike to close much higher than the current price. According to the seller, it is a ground up rebuild with almost all new parts. It is missing the battery tray, so factor that in if you want this bike. Overall, a very beautiful motorcycle.

1981 Yamaha XS650 Cafe Racer

There are not a lot of photos of this XS650 being auctioned on eBay right now, so what you see is what you get. But the guy’s email address and phone is in the listing if you’re interested in finding out more before bidding/buying. The sum total info in the listing is as follows: “1981 XS 650 Yamaha cafe racer. Not sure of milage, but starts right up and runs great. New rear shocks. New club man handle bars, new bar-end mirrors.” There’s one bid of $1,500 with 2.5 days left.

1974 Norton Commando 850 Cafe Racer

I thought I had posted this bike already, but apparently I hadn’t. There’s only a little over a day left in the auction, so I’m sorry for the late notice. It is a beautiful bike, though, so I’m glad I caught it…

This Commando 850 cafe racer appears to be a pretty clean bike. The paint appears to be in good condition, and the “engine has fresh service and valve adjustment, all new fluids, runs perfectly…………. easy start hot or cold” to quote the seller. No idea if that’s true or not. It’s got a bunch of new parts and upgrades including 18″ wheels and an electronic ignition. Overall, a really nice Norton.

1973 Honda CB500 Cafe Racer

Here’s a nice home-brewed cafe racer up for auction on eBay that includes some nice upgrades. The best upgrade as far as I’m concerned is the 605cc big-bore kit. While this isn’t the shiniest, prettiest cafe racer on the road, chances are it will surprise just about any trailer queen it finds on the road. Some of the other mods done to this bike are hyrbridized tank and guages from a couple of different period correct Honda twins, bobbed front and rear fenders, and an electronic ignition.

While bidding is low on this bike right now (about $450), reserve hasn’t been met and the Buy-It-Now is $3K, so I would suspect that the reserve is pretty close to the BIN price. Because of the not-so-perfect aesthetics, it may or may not hit reserve. But with a little bit of cosmetic work, this bike could be a screamer and an eye-catching Sunday morning ride.

1974 Honda CB350F Cafe Racer

While this is a repost here on the blog, it is also a relist on eBay.And this time it appears to be a no reserve auction which already has 1 bidder at $2,800. I’m sometimes skeptical of relists as I have no idea if it’s real or a scam. However…

In this case, I liked this bike so much the first time around that I decided to repost it anyways. And I even included the rest of the pictures I didn’t post last time. This is a very beautiful bike that truly stands out among cafe racers. Especially those of the home built variety. Here’s a link to the original post on 4/22/09.
