I’m not quite sure what to make of this bike. The idea seems good in concept (fully-faired two-stroke cafe racer), but in looking this bike over I’m not sure that it has been executed fully. Stock, it’s a great bike that I would love to own and convert to a cafe. I just think I would keep it more traditional.
Gripe list – square headlight, stock taillight, cafe seat plopped on the rear fender.
Like list – full fairing, two-stroke 500cc engine, fairly reasonable price.
With about 21 hours left in this eBay auction, here’s a chance to own a classic Gus Kuhn Norton that is fully kitted out. It’s definitely not a show bike, and as the seller claims it starts easily and runs great this would probably be a great bike for Sunday morning runs up to Alice’s Restaurant. That being said, I’m sure this bike would attract a lot of attention if it was parked at any classic bike show.

Here’s something we don’t see every day. It’s a very nice 1978 Suzuki GS1000 that has a mild cafe treatment done to it. I like the clean, somewhat stock appearance of this bike. It’s very much as if a guy back in 1978 rolled this bike off the showroom floor, stuck a cafe fairing and some shocks on a new bike, and went riding.
By no means is the bike perfect. The seller is very honest in the listing about the small things that are wrong with the bike, but I’ve owned new Suzukis in the last 10 years that have had far more problems than this bike. I think it will end up selling for a reasonable price if it breaks reserve, especially compared to the last bike I posted. But that could be perfect for someone who isn’t interested in a radical cafe build, and just wants a comfortable but sporty ride. There are four days left in this auction, and the price is only at $560.
Back on March 24th, 2009, I posted what I believe to be this exact same bike (Click here…), and it had some issues that needed fixing. And now it appears they have been fixed. The current seller of this bike replaced the windscreen and gotten it running fine (according to the seller). Reserve hasn’t been met yet, but bidding is only at about $1,500 with 15 hours left.
Is this a cafe racer? Not really.
Is it ultra-cool? Absolutely!!!
This is a really well-done Kenny Roberts replica that has been made street legal to boot. The look is there, and the seller’s description claims that the bike is fully mechanically sound (“IT RUNS PERFECTLY WITH A ONE KICK START”). Overall, this is one great bike up on the eBay auction block.
Bidding is currently at $4K on the nose with the next bid supposedly breaking the reserve. There are almost 4 days left in the auction with 14 bidders. If you’ve got +$5K burning a hole in your pocket, this bike could be yours…
While not a full conversion, enough has been done to this BMW R75/6 listed on eBay to qualify as a nice, comfortable to ride cafe racer. No rear-sets and drag bars make this a fairly mild build-up, but the overall look is quite nice. It’s got the seat, the black paint, the black twin megaphone exhaust, and the Black Rain fairing. Yes, they could have gone further, but this would actually be a comfortable bike to ride all day. And it looks the part!
There are almost two days left int he auction, and the seller has zero bids with a starting price of $1,800. I think that eBay’s new zero-up-front-fees pricing structure is bringing more bikes out of storage and on to the market. Maybe we will start to see even nicer bikes appearing soon…
Mike posted a question about where to find parts to build up a replica CR181 such as the one shown just below that I found on The World Of Motorcycles website. Below that I posted some Airtech parts that would fairly well create a Mike Hailwood GP replica. As for seats, they are available on eBay, at Airtech, or from any one of a number of cafe racer parts companies.
I honestly think that it is going to be tough to create an exact replica without spending a large amount of money to recreate parts to fit whatever bike Mike ends up selecting as the starting point for this project. However, he should be able to recreate a RC181 vibe without too much trouble…

Hi I am the owner and advertizer of this Rickman and you are correct it will need alot of restoration but if you want more information i’d be happy to give it to you, From what i know is the bike was purchased from the original owner in 1982 and was raced at daytona by a man named edward hardee it was stored in 1986 and has remained in storage ever since. It has changed hands a few times and i ended up with it after my brother passed away. I was going to start restoration on it however i am planning to move to the Philippines for a few years while my wife studies there for her MD. The bike has some rust on the front tubes but looks like it can be removed the clip on’s will need to be re-chromed and the frame polished or re dipped to restore the nickle finish the borrani rims seem to be in good shape however the motor is siezed but a good canidate for a rebuild as it ran when stored and only has 12,847 miles on it. The bike has never been in a wreck but just unfortunetly uncared for but certainly worth bringing back to its former glory with time and patience. If you need more information or photo’s i’d be happy to send that to anyone thanks –

Before you get too excited about this bike, please understand that it appears like it needs A LOT of work. Not a little. Not some. Not a fair to middlin’ amount of work. A LOT!!!
There are lots of vintage looking pieces on the bike, but the seller isn’t really providing much description. I think if you buy this machine you should have to expect to replace lots of the bits that actually make the bike start, run, and stop.
On the other hand, there are lots of nice (claimed) Rickman parts that, when the bike is done being restored, will get oohs and ahhs when you park the bike at The Rock Store, Alice’s Restaurant, somewhere along the Tail of the Dragon, or at your local bike night. There’s potential here, but it’s going to take some hard work to uncover it…
Here’s a really well done last-generation Sportster cafe racer. Nearly everything that can be done to it has been done. Only thing missing in my humble opinion is longer shocks in the back. Something like a 13.5″ adjustable Ohlins, or the Progressive 15″ shocks.
The price is kind of high for this bike. It is up on eBay with a Buy-It-Now of $8,500, but the auction price is starting at $7,400 and it has zero bidders.
I have to admit that I wish my Sportster looked like this. I have a feeling that mine would out-handle this one, but in looks and motor this one leaves mine for dead. Oh well. Maybe I can make some progress soon…
Up for auction on eBay right now is the project bike that has the potential to turn into a really beautiful cafe racer. The seller has an okay description and more great pictures available in the listing, but the highlights are as follows…
Supposedly original Dunstall fairing, but has a few fixable cracks from a garage incident (see photo 4 below on the lower right side)
Hardly complete. Needs controls, front brakes, carbs installed/rebuilt, exhaust, foot controls, etc, etc, etc.
More work than it appears from first glance, but a great final outcome possible with enough elbow grease.
This seller also claims to have a garage full of bike (around 30) that he will be selling. I may try to contact him to find out what’s up with this collection being sent to the auction block. There might be some more potentially beautiful cafe racers coming up for sale!
