1975 Honda CB400 Cafe Racer

This is one of the more modified cafe racers to come up on eBay in a long time. Whether you love or hate the seat, the rest of the bike is built to the hilt. The seller claims the bike “runs super strong”, and from the spec list we have no reason to doubt him. Check out some of the modifications…

So what’s the good? Lots of cool modifications that should make this one of the fastest CB400’s around. And what’s the bad? That seat. Oh yeah. The bike ain’t cheap, either. With about a day and a half left in the auction, there are no bidders and the starting price is $3,900. However, there is no reserve, so if there’s one bid, the bike will sell.

1976 Honda CB400F Super Sport

There have been bikes I have posted before where I have implored everyone who might possibly buy the bike not to modify the bike. This is another one of those motorcycles. I don’t know if the 298.7 miles that the odometer shows are the true miles, but it is either true or the restoration job is masterful. Check out the pictures as there isn’t much to say about this bike given its stock condition.

There are about 17 hours left in the auction, and the price is approaching $5K with 22 bidders. This is a nice bike that could very easily end up in someone’s never-ridden collection, but I hope I see it up at Alice’s Restaurant or the Rock Store some time…

Honda CB400 Cafe Racer

It’s been a while since a new, non-relisted quality bike has come up on eBay for sale, but here’s a pretty nice example of a well-built cafe racer. Not only is it a nice looking bike, but it comes with some good parts both on the bike and as spares. That doesn’t mean there aren’t any issues. I think the very first photo points that out. But overall, it is a fairly good build.

So first off the bad (since there’s a long list of the “good” below). I don’t know what to make of that exhaust mount/mile of aluminum stock. I get that the exhaust has to be mounted, but I just don’t buy that 2 feet of aluminum is the way to do it. And the tank has a couple of scratches that the seller honestly points out in one o fthe photos that I didn’t post. The seller also mentions something about the timing chain and adjuster, and I wish that more description was given about it. That’s it.

The good is that this appears to be a bike that has been relatively well built compared to some of the other bikes that appear on eBay. The long list below includes both parts installed on the bike, and some spares that could either be sold off or kept as backup. The paint job is very nice, but I’m not sure if the exhaust really goes with the classic looking style. I know that Ontario exhausts are probably somewhat period correct, but I would sell that thing off and go with a more standard exhaust. Or maybe it helps the bike put down some good horsepower numbers.

Anyways, like always, ask the seller questions before you bid, read the description carefully, and good luck if you try to win this bike. The seller’s feedback is decent, but fairly light over the last 12 months. The price is currently at $2,800 with zero bidders and just over 3 days left.

    2) Giuliari café seat made in Italy (with custom leather cover) ($450.oo ~ if you can find one)
    3) Tomaselli clip-on’s and new needle bearing set in the headstock

    6) Powder-coated hubs w/new wheel bearings (labor excedes value )

    8 ) Custom dual disc front end w/progressive springs and drilled rotors (labor excedes value) . .. styling is priceless. Hey I’m not bragging, everyone say this about the bike. The triple clamps are CB750 w/ CB400 stem, welded shims. Progressive Springs in tubes.
    9) Halogen headlamp in steel CB750 bucket (powder coated)
    10) Dyna ignition
    11) Smith metric speedometer (cable missing)

    Here is a list of extra parts that are not on, but come with the bike:
    1) Spare motor with only 9,000 miles ~ punched out to 450cc. (not assembled)
    2) 450cc Piston kit (possibly Yoshimira)
    3) Genuine Honda gasket and seal kit
    4) CR 26mm carbs from SUDCO (new in box)
    5) Dyna coils

1976 Honda CB400F Super Sport

Before getting into the details of this bike, I just want to say something for the record. I am in no way advocating the tear-down of this motorcycle into a cafe racer or other modified form be it race bike, bobber, chopper, etc., etc., etc…

What we have here is an unrestored, but amazingly clean and beautiful CB400F Super Sport from the year 1976. It only has 6K miles, and the seller is supposedly a factory trained Honda mechanic who has adjusted all necessary doohickies (that’s a technical term for those of you not mechanically inclined) so the bike can be ridden immediately upon purchase. There are a few more pictures on eBay, and the seller has done a good job of describing the tune-up he gave the bike. His feedback is good, with a decent amount of selling over the last year, so if you decide to get in on the bidding or pay the Buy-It-Now price ($6.5K), it should be a pretty safe transaction. Bidding is pretty heavy with 12 bidders taking the price up to $1,925 with 3 days left. Awesome bike for whomever wins the auction!!!

Oh yeah. If you win this bike and then tear it apart to make a cafe racer, you will hear the cries and screams of thousands of classic bike fans who wish you would have started with a beater, and not this nearly off the showroom floor example…


Steve “Carpy” Carpenter is holding a garage sale on eBay…

For those of you who follow the world of cafe racers, you probably know of Steve “Carpy” Carpenter. For those of you who don’t, he’s a transplanted Brit who has got a shop in Southern California from which he builds some of the best cafe racers on the planet. He primarily uses the CB750 SOHC bikes as his starting point. Over the last couple of days, I posted two items that he had listed before I figured out he has a whole bunch of stuff up on eBay. The link in the photos below goes to his “View seller’s other items” page on eBay. It looks like he’s clearing out some extra CB750 parts (plus the CB550 I posted yesterday). BMW R-Series Cafe Racer Seat

For your perusal, a fiberglass cafe racer seat for BMW R-Series models. The bikes pictured below are pretty sweet, an that is a good looking cafe seat on them. These bikes are generally as reliable as can be, and they build up into really nice cafe racers. The bikes can be bought for a reasonable sum, and there are lots of them still around.

The listing claims fitment for 1973-1984 R90/6 and R100/7 models, plus fitment to some other beemers, Hondas, and Yamahas that may require some fiberglass trimming. The price ($155 + $20 shipping) seems mostly reasonable compared to the other offerings out there, and the feedback for these seats has been good. Clean CB400 – Fully Cafe’d

This looks like a cool, ready to ride bike. I really like it! The paint is done well (from a design perspective), and it looks pretty clean overall. Maybe I need to start a project like this…
